Monte Carlo Rally is one of the favourite rallies in the championship. It’s the one to win. I’m fortunate to say that we won in 2006, 2010 and then, of course, last year was a great year, winning with Sébastien Ogier. Monte Carlo is the rally with the most prestige. You start in Casino Square, then get into some of those classic stages up near Gap. Of course, with it being the season opener, as well, it just has so much more importance.
You’ve got so many variables in road conditions. You can have bone dry, clear roads, 100mm of snow or sheet ice. So it’s the most demanding from a testing point of view for the team. The tyre situation, as well. There’s a lot of pressure on there. A lot of permutations. A massive job on the Michelin side. If you make a wrong tyre choice then you can pay a heavy price. But if you make the right choice you could probably even win the rally very early on in the event.
2017 has given us the best championship we have had for many, many years. I think we’re in for another incredible season in 2018. Drivers’ championship-wise, I think we’re going to be very, very strong with Elfyn and Sébastien.
