JOSH SADLIER: I’m Edmunds’
editor, Josh Sadlier, and this is a rundown
of the features you’ll find in the 2018 Ford Flex. The Flex is a unique alternative
to large SUVs providing similar interior space in
conjunction with unique styling and a powerful turbo V6 engine
available on top trim levels. Out of the three
available trims, we think the SEL
is the right mix of features for your dollar. The SEL rolls on 18 inch
wheels and upgraded brakes, while the interior offers
dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, a
10-way power driver’s seat, a 6-way power
front passenger seat, and Ford’s powerful Sync
3 infotainment system. If space for stuff
and easy access are your primary
requirements, the Flex remains a great choice. The Flex has plenty
of cargo space, and a power liftgate is
available in an option package that also includes rear
cross-traffic alert, power adjustable pedals, leather
upholstery, and an upgraded sound system. The second row has plenty
of room to stretch out, and the third row is tolerable
for average height adults. The snappy infotainment system
has powerful voice controls and supports Android
Auto plus Apple CarPlay. On the downside, the
Flex has annoying touch-sensitive controls for
climate and audio functions, while the steering wheel
buttons are difficult to use and poorly labeled. The Flex’s front seat cushions
are flat and featureless. Support for long distance
driving is lacking, and the short seat
bottoms may not be comfortable for
taller drivers. The Ford Flex’s top competitors
include the Honda Pilot, the Toyota Highlander,
and the Hyundai Santa Fe. Bottom line, the Flex
hasn’t had a full redesign since it debuted
in 2009, so it’s beginning to feel a little old. Still, it’s hard to find a
vehicle with similar styling and cargo space elsewhere,
making the Flex a unique option for your next new car.
